You’re walking down the halls of your high school, books in hand, when you realize you’re not wearing pants. It’s the proverbial back to school nightmare… but you’ll have to attend the Fringe Cabaret on August 26 to see if Fringe alumni turn it into a sketch!

There are now a series of Fringe Cabarets throughout the year featuring Fringe Fest alumni in variety show with sketch, storytelling, dance, burlesque, clown, and more! And tickets are just $16.50! You can even add a Fringe Cabaret to your Theatre Wire Subscription and save even more!

Jeff Leard, known for The Show Must Go On and The Jupiter Rebellion: A Zach Zultana Adventure is head of this Fringe class and he sat down to tell us a little more about what to expect at the upcoming Fringe Cabaret.

Theatre Wire: Tell us about the Back to School Special. Why did you choose that as the theme for this Cabaret?

Jeff Leard: We chose that theme as a throwback to that special time of year we all remember from our grade school days, when summer is winding down and the dread and excitement of starting a new grade looms ahead. It’s a time of shopping for new jeans and highlighters, fresh binders, and reams of 8 1/2 x 11 loose leaf paper. A time for hoping you grew taller than that kid in your grade you don’t like. But we are adults and we don’t have to go back to school. For us the end of the summer means that Fringe is just around the corner! So in this Cabaret we will mix the two together, and create a prescribed learning outcome so once our audience members graduate our program they’ll be warmed up and ready to Fringe with the best of them.

TW: What are you most looking forward to that’ll be part of the Cabaret?

JL: We are excited to have another film short by Cory Thibert and Natalie Watson, who made the On The Fringe documentary, which they will be taking to Taipei on September 3. This cabaret also marks our first venture into the depths of serious drama in the style of Tennessee Williams or Arthur Miller with the premier of a new series entitled “Big Problems, Small Furniture.”

TW: Who’s involved in the Back to School Special Cabaret?

JL: Myself, obviously, and Fraz Wiest, Tara Travis, Jayson McDonald, Linnea Gwiazda, Cory Thibert, Len Harvey, Mika Laulainen, Nico Dicecco, Natalie Watson, Megan Phillips, and Andrew Bailey.
