This past Monday, June 27, Vancouver’s theatre community came together to celebrate some of the best shows performed in the city over the past year. Congratulations to all the artists and theatre companies who were nominated and to those who won a Jessie Richardson Theatre Award!
This year, the Jessie’s have been working to reflect the diversity in our community and it was apparent on stage that night. The show opened with Eagle Song Dancers, members of the Squamish Nation, who performed an opening ceremony, including the song “Snow Bird,” which they jokingly reminded us was not the Anne Murray version!
You can read about all the winners on the Jessie’s website, but we want to highlight Theatre Wire’s involvement.
We proudly sponsored the Award for Outstanding Production of a Play in the Small Theatre Category. Our very own Audience Services Manager, Angie Descalzi, was one of the presenters that night!Meanwhile, Theatre Wire alumni were recognized among the winners!
Twenty Something Theatre was part of Theatre Wire’s inaugural season with Tender Napalm, which garnered Joel Sturrock an award for Significant Artistic Achievement for Outstanding Choreography.
And while The North Plan wasn’t part of our subscription series, we sold their tickets and feel like we can claim them as our own. The show won three awards including Outstanding Performance by an Actress in a Lead Role, Genevieve Fleming; Outstanding Direction, Chelsea Haberlin; and Outstanding Production of a Play.
Theatre Wire will continue to present Vancouver’s independent artists and we look forward to seeing them recognized at future Jessie Awards ceremonies!
